Hard water and your plumbing

Hard water carries calcium and magnesium. When it's heated, those minerals drop out as scale inside water heaters, on faucet aerators and shower heads, and inside pipes. Scale makes water heaters work harder and wear out sooner. We explain how hard water hurts plumbing.

Softeners

A water softener swaps hardness minerals out of the water before it reaches your fixtures. It sits on the main line, usually in the basement, and needs salt topped up periodically.

Filtration

Filters range from an under-sink unit for drinking water to a whole-house system on the main line. The right choice depends on what you want removed. This is for city-supplied water only. We don't maintain or treat wells or well water, but we do repair and replace plumbing fixtures inside homes on wells.

Where we work

Most municipalities in Middlesex, Somerset, and Monmouth counties; Select Union, Ocean, Mercer and Hunterdon municipalities only. Contact us to confirm whether your job site is within our current service area. Water hardness varies by town and water supplier, so we look at your water before recommending a system.

Leaking pipe right now?

Shut off the water first if you can reach the valve safely, then call us, day or night.

908-873-6686

Outside regular hours and on holidays, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Stay clear of electricity. Don't enter standing water or touch electrical controls near the leak.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Water Treatment Systems: common questions

Do I need a water softener?

If you see white crust on faucets and shower heads, spots on dishes and glass, soap that won't lather well, or a water heater full of sediment, your water is likely hard. A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, which protects your pipes, fixtures and water heater and helps them last longer.

What is the difference between a water softener and a filter?

A softener removes hardness minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, that cause scale. A filter removes things like chlorine taste and smell, sediment or specific contaminants, depending on the type. They solve different problems, so many homes use both: a softener on the main line and a drinking water filter at the kitchen sink.

Do you install filters for well water?

No. Our water treatment is for city-supplied water only, and we don't maintain or treat wells or well water. We do repair and replace plumbing fixtures inside the home, even if the home is on well water.

How often do you add salt to a water softener?

Most homes add salt every one to two months, depending on how hard the water is, how much water the household uses and the size of the brine tank. Keep the tank at least about a quarter full and check it monthly. A crust of hardened salt (a salt bridge) can stop the softener from working even when the tank looks full.

Will a water softener help my water heater?

Yes. Hard water leaves scale and sediment in the tank and on heating elements, which makes the heater work harder, adds rumbling noises and shortens its life. Softened water slows that buildup a lot. You should still flush the tank about once a year.
