How Much Does Drain Cleaning Cost?

By Mike Holt, NJ Master Plumber · October 29, 2026 · 2 min read · Updated November 1, 2026

Quick answer

Drain cleaning cost depends on which drain is clogged and how it has to be cleared, so we price each job after we assess it. Method depends on pipe material, structural condition, obstruction and access. Our service call is $49, waived if you go ahead with the work, and you get written upfront flat-rate pricing options before we start.

The cost of drain cleaning depends on where the clog is and what it takes to clear it. Before you call, it's worth trying the steps in our guides to unclogging a drain, a kitchen sink or a shower.

What changes the price?

FactorWhy it matters
Which drainOne sink, tub or toilet is usually a smaller job than the main sewer line that serves the whole house.
How it's clearedA drain snake handles many single-fixture clogs. Hydro jetting takes more equipment and isn't suitable for every pipe.
AccessA main line with a reachable cleanout is quicker to clear than one where we have to pull a toilet or find a buried cleanout first.
Camera inspectionMay be recommended where conditions warrant. It can show roots, a sag or a crack.
Emergency serviceOutside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee, which replaces the standard $49 service fee. During regular hours there is no emergency fee.

Snaking or hydro jetting?

Method depends on pipe material, structural condition, obstruction and access. Older or damaged piping may not be suitable for high-pressure jetting. Camera inspection may be recommended where conditions warrant. We explain the difference in should I have my pipes snaked or hydro jetted?

What about drain cleaner from the store?

It can eat at older pipes and often clears only a small channel through the clog. The chemicals also make the next visit more dangerous for whoever opens the pipe.

How to avoid paying for it twice

  • Keep grease, coffee grounds and food scraps out of the kitchen sink.
  • Use hair catchers in tubs and showers.
  • Flush only toilet paper. Wipes sold as flushable still clog lines.
  • If the same drain clogs twice in a few months, ask for a camera inspection.

More habits are in how to keep drains from clogging.

How we quote

We assess the drain and give you job-specific pricing. A service call is $49, waived if you go ahead with the work. Written upfront flat-rate pricing options. You choose. Additional work is quoted before written authorization from the client. Any latent conditions that change the upfront price will be given to the client in writing and will require written approval prior to our starting the work on the latent condition. Most company-supplied materials and repairs come with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. Client-supplied materials are not covered under our warranty. Outside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location. See drain cleaning or call 908-873-6686.

FAQ

Questions we get about this

Don't see your question? Call us and ask.

Call 908-873-6686
Why is main line drain cleaning more expensive than a sink?

A main line serves the whole house, runs farther and may be clogged by roots, grease or wipes deep in the pipe. It can take larger equipment, and a camera may be recommended to check the cause, while one sink may need only a small snake.

Is hydro jetting worth it?

It depends on the line. For kitchen lines and main lines that clog again and again, it can help if the pipe is suitable. Older or damaged piping may not be suitable for high-pressure jetting. We'll tell you what we recommend and why.

Does homeowners insurance cover drain cleaning?

Usually not. Clogs are treated as maintenance. Some policies cover water damage from a sudden backup if you have sewer backup coverage, but not the cleaning itself. Check your own policy.

How long does drain cleaning take?

A single fixture often takes under an hour. A main line with roots, or one that needs a camera inspection afterward, takes longer. We tell you what to expect when we quote.

How often should drains be professionally cleaned?

Most homes only need it when there's a problem. If a line clogs more than once or twice a year, ask whether a camera inspection makes sense.

Leaking pipe right now?

Shut off the water first if you can reach the valve safely, then call us, day or night.

Outside regular hours and on holidays, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Stay clear of electricity. Don't enter standing water or touch electrical controls near the leak.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Found my outdoor cleanout that was covered up for years and no other company could find! … They use drop cloths and clean up when they are done.
