What usually goes wrong

Most water heater breakdowns come down to one part. On a gas tank, that's often the thermocouple, igniter or gas valve. On an electric tank, it's usually a heating element or thermostat. Sediment on the bottom of the tank can also cause rumbling and slow recovery.

Water heaters we repair

  • Gas tank heaters
  • Electric tank heaters
  • Tankless heaters: diagnostics, repairs and maintenance only

We don't service oil-fired units. If the tank itself is leaking or the heater keeps breaking down, see water heater replacement.

Where we work

Found my outdoor cleanout that was covered up for years and no other company could find! … They use drop cloths and clean up when they are done.

Leaking pipe right now?

Shut off the water first if you can reach the valve safely, then call us, day or night.

908-873-6686

Outside regular hours and on holidays, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Stay clear of electricity. Don't enter standing water or touch electrical controls near the leak.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Water Heater Repair: common questions

Can you repair my water heater, or does it need replacing?

If one part has failed, such as a thermostat, heating element, gas valve or igniter, a repair usually makes sense. If the tank itself is leaking, it has to be replaced, because a tank can't be patched. We test it first and tell you which one you're looking at.

Why do I have no hot water?

On a gas heater, the usual causes are the pilot, the igniter, the thermocouple or the gas valve. On an electric heater, look at the breaker, the high-limit reset, the heating elements and the thermostats. Our guide to no hot water covers what you can safely check first.

Do you repair tankless water heaters?

Yes. We do diagnostics, repairs and maintenance on tankless units. We don't install or replace them.

How much does water heater repair cost?

It depends on the part and how hard it is to reach, so we price it after we test the heater. The service call is $49, waived if you go ahead with the work. Written upfront flat-rate pricing options. You choose.

I smell gas near my water heater. What should I do?

Leave the building immediately. Do not operate switches, flames, appliances or phones inside. From a safe location call 911 and the gas utility. Do not re-enter until cleared.
