How Much Does Sewer Line Repair Cost?
By Mike Holt, NJ Master Plumber · October 29, 2026 · 2 min read · Updated November 1, 2026
Quick answer
Sewer line repair cost depends on what's wrong with the line, so we price each job after we assess it. A camera inspection may be recommended where conditions warrant. Clearing roots from a sound line is usually the smallest job, and a section or full replacement is bigger. We don't do outside digging or excavation. If your job needs it, contact us to confirm scope. Our service call is $49, waived if you go ahead with the work.

Sewer line repair covers a wide range of jobs, from clearing roots to replacing the whole line to the street. We don't do outside digging or excavation. If your job needs it, contact us to confirm scope. We don't publish market prices, because the price depends on your job.
What changes the price?
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What's wrong | Roots and buildup can often be cleared, by a method that suits the pipe. One crack or offset joint can be repaired on its own. A line that's collapsed or sagging in several places needs replacing. |
| Length and depth | A longer or deeper lateral means a bigger job. We don't do outside digging or excavation, so contact us to confirm scope. |
| What's above it | A driveway, patio or mature trees over the line make it harder to reach. |
| Pipe material | Older clay and cast-iron lines can have problems along more of their length. |
| Permits | Permit requirements depend on scope and applicable UCC exceptions. Confirm with your local enforcing agency. |
| Emergency service | Outside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee, which replaces the standard $49 service fee. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. |
When is a camera recommended?
Camera inspection may be recommended where conditions warrant. Clearing a line tells you it was blocked, not why. A camera can show roots, cracks, sags and collapsed sections, so you can weigh your options with the footage in front of you. We explain more in what's the point of a sewer camera inspection?
Is trenchless sewer replacement an option?
Sometimes. Trenchless methods work through small access holes instead of a long trench, but not every line is a candidate. Contact us to confirm whether we handle your scope.
Clearing or repair?
If roots or grease are the only problem and the pipe is sound, clearing may be enough. The method depends on pipe material, structural condition, the obstruction and access; see snaking vs. hydro jetting. If the same line backs up every few months, the pipe itself may be the problem.
Can you pay over time?
Yes. For bigger jobs we offer financing through Wisetack.
How we quote
After we assess the line, you get job-specific pricing for the work we can do. Written upfront flat-rate pricing options. You choose. Additional work is quoted before written authorization from the client. Any latent conditions that change the upfront price will be given to the client in writing and will require written approval prior to our starting the work on the latent condition. Most company-supplied materials and repairs come with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. Client-supplied materials are not covered under our warranty. Outside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location. We don't do outside digging or excavation.
