How to check a plumber's license
Step 1: Ask for the license number and the name on it
Ask for the New Jersey master plumber license number and the name of the person who holds it. You need the person's name because a company name alone may not bring up the license. A good company gives you both right away. Ours is NJ Master Plumber Lic. #36BI01345600.
Step 2: Open the state's verification site
Go to newjersey.mylicense.com/verification. The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs runs it, and the state says it shows the most current license information.
Step 3: Choose Person Search
The site asks you to pick Business Search or Person Search. Choose Person Search, because master plumbers aren't on the state's list of business licenses. Then search with the details you were given.
Step 4: Check the result
Make sure the name and number match what you were told, and that the license shows as active. If it lists an expiration date, check that too.
Step 5: Ask if something doesn't match
Typos happen, so ask the company to confirm the spelling and the number. If it still doesn't match, or they get vague about it, call the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers. Its contact details are on the board's page.
What the license tells you
In New Jersey, plumbing work for hire has to be done by or under a licensed master plumber, and the master plumber applies for any permit. So the person at your house may not hold the license themselves, and that's normal. Ask whose license covers your job. Our guide to NJ plumbing codes and permits explains when a permit is needed.
