How Much Does Sump Pump Replacement Cost?

By Mike Holt, NJ Master Plumber · October 29, 2026 · 2 min read · Updated November 1, 2026

Quick answer

Sump pump replacement cost depends on the pump you need and what else around it needs work, so we price each job after we assess it. A new pump in a sound pit is the simplest job; a check valve, discharge line, pit or battery backup adds to it. We charge a $49 service call, waived if you go ahead with the work.

Replacing a sump pump in an existing pit is usually a straightforward job. The price goes up when the pit, check valve or discharge line also needs work, or when you add a battery backup.

What changes the price?

FactorWhy it matters
The pumpPumps differ in power and build. A basement that takes on a lot of water needs a stronger pump than one that sees water only in big storms.
Battery backupA backup pump runs when the power goes out. It adds to the cost and saves you during the storms that cut power.
Check valve and discharge lineA new pump on a cracked discharge line or a failed check valve still leaves water in the basement, so these are often replaced together.
The pitA pit that's too small, damaged or missing a proper cover takes more work.
Emergency serviceOutside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee, which replaces the standard $49 service fee. During regular hours there is no emergency fee.

Repair or replace?

Sometimes the pump is fine and a stuck float switch or a failed check valve is the problem, which costs less to fix. If the motor is worn out, the pump hums without moving water, or it's getting old, replacement may be the better call. Our sump pump test guide covers simple testing from a dry, safe location.

Why replace it before it fails?

A sump pump can fail during a heavy storm, often with the power out, and that's the worst time to find out. Test it each spring from a dry, safe location, as part of our spring plumbing checklist.

How we quote

We look at the pump, the pit, the check valve and the discharge line, then give you job-specific pricing, including a backup if you want one. A service call is $49, waived if you go ahead with the work. Written upfront flat-rate pricing options. You choose. Additional work is quoted before written authorization from the client. Any latent conditions that change the upfront price will be given to the client in writing and will require written approval prior to our starting the work on the latent condition. Most company-supplied materials and repairs come with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. Client-supplied materials are not covered under our warranty. Outside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location. Call 908-873-6686
How long does a sump pump last?

Many sump pumps last somewhere around 7 to 10 years, but it varies. Pumps that run often, in basements with a high water table or frequent storms, can wear out sooner. Test yours from a dry, safe location by pouring a bucket of water into the pit; it should start, empty the pit and shut off on its own.

Is it worth repairing a sump pump or should I replace it?

Repair it if the motor is fine and a float switch or check valve failed, which are smaller fixes. Replace it if the motor hums without moving water, the pump is near the end of its life, or it has failed more than once.

Does homeowners insurance cover sump pump failure?

Standard policies often exclude flooding from a failed sump pump unless you added water backup coverage. The pump itself is usually treated as maintenance. Check your own policy and ask your insurer what's covered.

Is a battery backup sump pump worth it?

If your basement takes on water when the pump stops, yes. The storms that bring heavy rain to Central New Jersey also knock out power, and a main pump without power does nothing. A battery backup takes over on its own.

How long does it take to replace a sump pump?

Swapping a pump in a sound pit is often done in a single visit. A new pit, a new discharge line or adding a backup takes longer. We give you a time estimate with your written options.

Leaking pipe right now?

Shut off the water first if you can reach the valve safely, then call us, day or night.

Outside regular hours and on holidays, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location.

Do this now

  1. Shut the main valve. Usually where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. Stay clear of electricity. Don't enter standing water or touch electrical controls near the leak.
  3. Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.
