How Much Does Water Heater Replacement Cost?
By Mike Holt, NJ Master Plumber · October 29, 2026 · 3 min read · Updated November 1, 2026
Quick answer
Water heater replacement cost depends on the heater and what the installation needs, so we price each job after we assess it. A same-size tank swap is the simplest job; fuel changes, new venting and code items add to it. We charge a $49 service call, waived if you go ahead with the work. We replace tanks up to 50 gallons and don't install tankless units.

The cost of a new water heater depends on the kind of heater and on what the installation needs to be safe and pass inspection. We don't publish market prices, because every job is different. Here's what moves the price, so you know what to ask about before anyone starts.
What changes the price?
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Type | Heaters differ in price and in what they need to install. We replace gas and electric tanks. We don't install tankless units, heat pump units or oil-fired units. |
| Fuel | Gas and electric heaters differ in price. Switching fuels means new gas piping or electrical work. |
| Size | A bigger tank costs more. The right size depends on how many people use hot water at once. We don't install water heaters over 50 gallons. |
| Venting | Gas heaters need proper venting. Some replacements need new vent pipe. |
| Code items | Thermal expansion control, a new relief valve line or updated gas connections may be needed to pass inspection. |
| Permit | Permit requirements depend on scope and applicable UCC exceptions. Confirm with your local enforcing agency. |
| Access | A heater in a tight closet or crawl space takes longer to swap than one in an open basement. |
Should you repair or replace it?
Repair it when the tank is sound and a part failed. A bad thermostat, element, igniter or gas valve can often be fixed for much less than a new heater. Replace it when the tank leaks, or when it's more than about 10 years old and keeps breaking down.
If you have no hot water right now, see what you can safely check. If you have a tankless unit that has stopped working, we can diagnose and repair it, but we don't replace tankless units.
How long does a water heater last?
Many tank heaters last somewhere around 8 to 12 years, but it varies. Hard water can shorten that, because sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank. Maintenance helps, and our water heater flushing guide explains what's involved. For the differences between tank and tankless, see our overview of water heater types.
Can you pay over time?
Yes. A new water heater is a bigger purchase, so we offer financing through Wisetack. Checking your options takes a few minutes on your phone and doesn't affect your credit score.
How we quote
We look at the old heater, the space, the venting and the connections, then give you job-specific pricing. A service call is $49, waived if you go ahead with the work. Written upfront flat-rate pricing options. You choose. Additional work is quoted before written authorization from the client. Any latent conditions that change the upfront price will be given to the client in writing and will require written approval prior to our starting the work on the latent condition. Most company-supplied materials and repairs come with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. Client-supplied materials are not covered under our warranty. Outside regular hours, emergency service requires a $250 upfront emergency fee. When paid, the standard $49 service fee is waived. During regular hours there is no emergency fee. Additional repairs are quoted before work begins. We respond immediately upon contact; dispatch and arrival depend on availability and location.
